MHBA to implement several changes starting Feb. 1
The Board of Directors of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association continues to be proactive in working to ensure competitive incentives for breeders and owners of Maryland-bred Thoroughbreds. Along with many cost saving measures the MHBA will implement the following changes starting on Feb.1.

Special Bonus program

In response to the current economic slow-down, and as a precautionary measure, the Special Bonus on “a-other-than/non-winners of two races” allowance races will be suspended until industry revenues become more stable.

Please note that the Special Bonus on the maiden special weight races will continue.

Dues

Breeder/Owner membership dues will now be $200. It is important to note that these dues have not been increased in 20 years, but the benefits have been enhanced significantly during that time. Privileges of membership include discounts on registration, events, advertising and research; a subscription to the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred magazine and the Weekly Bulletin e-mail newsletter; legislative representation; and the NTRA group purchasing benefits.

While Maryland grapples with the process of executing a slots program designed to create new revenue streams for the racing and breeding industry, the MHBA is taking prudent and responsible steps to sustain a viable Maryland-bred Fund program.
